Do I need a building permit?
Find out when you need a building permit
A building permit is required for most building works. Never start building without checking whether you have the required permits.
For information on how to apply for a building permit go to the How to apply for a building permit web page.
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) document outlines whether you do or don't need a building permit for works including:
- hail netting
- masts/antennas/satellite dishes
- retaining walls
- sheds associated with a single dwelling
- real estate signs
- swimming pools and spas
- wood heaters
If, after reading this info you still need advice, call our Building team on 1300 787 624.
Note that although a building permit may not be required, a planning permit or other authority approval may still be needed.
