Do I need a building permit?

A building permit is required for most building works. Never start building without checking whether you have the required permits.

This Victorian Building Authority (VBA) document outlines whether you do or don't need a building permit for works including: 

  • additions
  • alterations
  • carports
  • decks
  • fences
  • garages
  • hail netting
  • masts/antennas/satellite dishes
  • re-blocking
  • retaining walls
  • roofing
  • sheds associated with a single dwelling
  • real estate signs
  • swimming pools and spas
  • verandahs
  • windows
  • wood heaters
