Build a stronger neighbourhood

  • We encourage all residents to get to know their neighbours. People are an essential ingredient in a great community and strong, resilient communities are built on local connections - this starts at your front door.
  • Knowing your neighbours can build friendships, welcome new people to the area, provide security in times of emergency or extreme weather events, help reduce social isolation and promote tolerance and respect.
  • Here are some ideas below to help you get to know your neighbours.

Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, bringing together the people next door, across the street or on the next farm for a beer, a barbecue or a ‘cuppa’.

Held on the last Sunday in March every year, it’s the perfect day to say thanks for being a great neighbour and to encourage resilient and connected neighbourhoods.

Some things you could do within your local community:

  • introduce yourself to older residents or anyone that lives alone.
  • organise a street party or a neighbourhood barbecue in the local park.
  • hold a community game of cricket or football.
  • celebrate your neighbours by sharing your ‘good neighbour’ story, why you love your neighbourhood or thanking your ‘good neighbour’.
  • connect with each other for safety, to swap phone numbers for emergencies, or to get together to make home emergency plans.

Visit the Neighbour Day website to find out more and get some tips on how to make great connections with your neighbours.
