Our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) service supports your child’s health and development from birth until school age. It is a free service.

For after-hours advice call the Maternal and Child Health Line on 13 22 29.

You and your child will see a MCH nurse for 10 visits between birth and 3 and a half years to keep track of their growth and development. Extra visits can be booked if you feel you need more support. We also offer information and guidance on parenting, health and wellbeing advice for mums, and group programs.

Your 10 maternal and child health visits:

  • Home visit (newborn)
  • 2 weeks
  • 4 weeks
  • 8 weeks
  • 4 months
  • 8 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 and a half years

A MCH nurse will contact you after the birth of your baby to arrange your home visit. We will pre-book your first 4 centre visits. You will need to contact your local MCH centre to make an appointment for the remaining checks.

Your Maternal and Child Health Service visits

The Child Development Information System (CDIS) allows your child's MCH information to be accessed at any MCH centre across Victoria. Your MCH nurse will give you a CDIS fact sheet at your first visit.

On CFA-declared 'Code Red' days some MCH centres will be closed and closures may also be considered for CFA-declared 'Extreme' days.

If you have an appointment on one of these days, a nurse will call you for a phone consultation. Otherwise if you have an appointment but will not be contactable on your usual number, contact us on 5943 4250.

Our Maternal and Child Health (MCH) team has additional services for parents having early parenting difficulties, including breastfeeding and support groups. We can also refer you to a range of health professionals and services to suit your needs.
