Getting kids active
Getting Cardinia Shire children moving
We have a number of initiatives designed to increase physical activity levels of primary school-aged children.
Stop and drop zones
Stop and Drop zones are a signposted location, up to a kilometre away from the school's entrance, where parents are encouraged to park and then walk, ride, scoot or skate with their children to school. We suggest students leave the zone by 8.30am to get to school on time. The zones can increase children’s physical activity and ease school traffic congestion.
Footpath stickers line the way to school from Stop and Drop zones in Beaconsfield and Bunyip. The stickers were designed in consultation with students, and funded by a 2015 National Ride2School Grant.
Students from schools around Cardinia Shire are encouraged to get to school in an active way (walk, ride, scoot or skate) every year during the month of March. The most active school during Mobile March is awarded the perpetual Mobile March trophy.
For more information, or to register your school to participate, contact Council’s Active Children’s Officer on 1300 787 624 or email email@example.com.
We have a bike trailer available for schools and community groups to hire. It has bikes, helmets and safety vests for 10 people, plus road signs.
Walk to school
Each October, we work with local primary schools to coordinate Walk to School. Each year, all primary schools in Cardinia Shire are invited to hold activities encouraging students to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school.
All participating schools will go in the draw to win great prizes, including skateboard lessons delivered by the YMCA for up to 150 students and a sports day delivered by Aligned Leisure.
There are also two great prizes for students to win, including a $250 gift voucher from Life of Bikes and a $100 gift voucher from Sports Power Pakenham.
Proudly supported by Cardinia Shire Council since 2010, the VicHealth campaign aims to help Victorian kids increase their daily physical activity to improve their health.
Walk to School 2019 selfie competition
Council's Walk to School selfie competition is also happening again in 2019, with all entries going in the draw to win weekly prizes!
Students and families can participate in the Walk to School selfie competition by sending their photos with their name, contact details and the location of the photo to Council's Active Children Officer by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Entries into the Walk to School selfie competition close 5pm, Friday 1 November 2019. Note: Photos may be shared on Council's Facebook pages.
