National Sorry Day 2016

Published: 26 May 2016

Cardinia Shire Council acknowledges that today is National Sorry Day.

The day is an opportunity for people to come together to recognise and continue work towards reconciliation for the stolen generations, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who were removed from their families and communities.

National Sorry Day was held on 26 May 1998, on the anniversary of the Bringing them Home Report in May 1997. The national day was arranged in response to a recommendation from a Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission inquiry that the day recognise past wrongs and the negative impact of past Australian policies and practices on Indigenous people.

For more information about the Bringing them Home report and Reconciliation Week, see the Reconciliation Australia website.
