Cardinia Shire pays tribute after the passing of Councillor Ray Brown

Cardinia Shire Council has paid tribute to Councillor Ray Brown who passed away on Friday 16 April, after a prolonged illness.

Councillor Ray BrownCr Ray Brown has served as a councillor for Cardinia Shire Council since 2016, represen ting the Port Ward from 2016 to 2000 alongside Councillor Graeme Moore, and representing Western Port Ward since October 2020. 

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Councillor Brett Owen said Ray would be remembered for his significant contributions to the community both through Council and as a volunteer.  

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Cr Ray Brown. All of us at Cardinia Shire Council would like to extend our sincere condolences to his wife Ellen, family, friends and wider community that knew and cherished Ray. 

“Ray was an exceptional councillor and an incredible advocate for his community. He had a long history of service with the Koo Wee Rup township committee, local clubs, and community centre. 

“He was passionate about advocating for and providing good infrastructure for the local community, as well as ensuring buildings, roads, footpaths and drains are properly maintained. Ray had a reputation for getting things done, and in his first term was instrumental in projects including improvements at Koo Wee Rup Recreation Reserve, adding three main roads to the sealed roads program and unveiling the Together We Can initiative,” Cr Owen said. 

Ray had lived in the region since 1970, and represented Council on a number of committees including the Audit Committee, Grants Evaluation Committee, Motorsports Clubs Steering Committee, Town Planning Committee, Westernport Catchment Implementation Committee, Western Port Biosphere Councillor Liaison Committee, and Yallock Drainage Advisory Committee to Melbourne Water. 

Recently, he celebrated the opening of the multi-million dollar Lang Lang Community Recreation Reserve and Pavilion, and oversaw the first roads commencing in Council’s Strategic Sealed Roads program at Koo Wee Rup as well as the commencement of works at Koo Wee Rup Recreation Reserve for a new netball pavilion and a new football and cricket pavilion.  

For his service to the community, Cr Ray Brown was awarded Cardinia Shire Citizen of the Year in 2011.
