Better Local Roads in Koo Wee Rup

Published: 30 November 2020

Cardinia Shire Council has invested $25 million into its Strategic Sealed Roads Project, part of its overall Better Local Roads program.

This Council investment will seal approximately 40 kilometres of local unsealed roads in seven locations across the municipality.

Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Owen said the project will be delivered by Council over the next two years.

“The Strategic Sealed Roads Project will create strategic links to existing sealed roads in locations where they are needed most, and where they will deliver the most benefit," Cr Owen said.

Main Drain Road (between Denhams Road and Ballarto Road) and Boundary Drain Road (between Denhams Road and Koo Wee Rup Road / Station Street) Koo Wee Rup will be the first roads in this project to be reconstructed. Work has commenced and is expected to be completed in April 2021.

Other roads and locations to follow include:

  • Evans Road: whole length (Bunyip)
  • Bessie Creek Road: unsealed section (Nar Nar Goon)
  • Denhams Road: unsealed section (Koo Wee Rup)
  • Mt Lyall Road: Westernport Road to the municipal boundary (Heath Hill)
  • Armytage Road: Brown Road to LL Road (Officer)
  • LL Road: whole length (Officer)
  • Thewlis Road: Peck Road to Brown Road (Pakenham)
  • Dore Road: whole length (Pakenham)
  • Huxtable Road: whole length (Pakenham Upper)
  • McGregor Road: whole length (Rythdale)
  • Soldiers Road: McGregor Road to Hobson Road (Rythdale)
  • Hobson Road: Ballarto Road to Soldiers Road (Rythdale).

These roads were chosen because they provided the best links between existing sealed road networks, were in the highest-traffic areas, offer the greatest convenience for road-users, have the most safety benefits, will allow for the greatest long-term cost savings (by reducing maintenance), and were most requested for road repairs and maintenance by the community.

“This project will deliver 40 kilometres of new, sealed roads and will reduce environmental impacts in the Shire normally associated with unsealed roads including run-off and dust, while improving comfort and service levels for road users,” Cr Owen said.

“Commuters having better access to sealed roads will reduce wear and tear and lower maintenance costs for commuters. Importantly it will also connect existing sealed roads in the places that they will deliver the most benefit - such as around schools and community facilities and in the highest-traffic areas,” Cr Owen said.

The scope of these works includes pavement construction, kerb and channel construction (where appropriate), construction of traffic calming devices (where appropriate), drainage works, signage, guardrails, and line-marking.

Cardinia Shire Council will reduce the impact of these works on residents and other stakeholders as far as possible.
