Mayor statement - Bunyip State Park fire

Published: 8 March 2019

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Graeme Moore says he is devastated on behalf of his community.

“Our thoughts and actions are first and foremost with all of our community members affected by the fires – particularly those who have lost their homes, whose homes have been damaged, those whose properties have been damaged, people who have lost animals … my heart goes out to them.

“Our actions are absolutely focussed on ensuring they are receiving the support they need,” he said.

The bushfire recovery centre at Bunyip Recreation Reserve on Longwarry-Nar Nar Goon Road, remains open to provide support and information including counselling, legal and insurance advice and options for financial assistance to residents from fire-affected areas. “The safety and wellbeing of our community remains Council’s number one priority and we will continue to work with our community and agencies.

“I am proud to be part of such a strong and supportive community – the offers of help and donations are testament to this – it’s truly heart-warming.

“We praise the efforts of all of the first responders – our emergency services and volunteers – and we are thinking of them as they continue to work in the area. Council crews also quickly mobilised to provide relief services, community support, to clear roads, improve access and importantly assist residents who have suffered building loss and damage. Our work will continue in earnest for as long as it takes for our community to recover.

“Please stay informed and monitor conditions,” he said.
