Cardinia motor sport precinct a step closer

Published: 6 June 2018

Plans for a world-class motor sport precinct in Cardinia Shire moved a step closer with Council signing a heads of agreement for the sale and development of land in McGregor Rd, Pakenham.

Council has selected its preferred developer, Podium 1 Pty Ltd, through a public procurement process involving an expression of interest and request for proposals campaign.

Proceeds from the sale will be used to purchase any additional land required to house the Koo Wee Rup and District Motor Cycle Club and the Pakenham Auto Club (currently located on the site) and the subsequent capital works (clubrooms, track etc) required for both clubs.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said the motor sport facility would include a racetrack, pit facilities and associated infrastructure, including an administration centre and hotel. It will offer driver training and education, and provide space for exhibitions including an amphitheatre/stage area. It will also have space to house associated businesses and activities.

“Over the next 20 years, the south east of Melbourne will be home to more than one million residents – a population larger than Tasmania, Darwin and Geelong combined – and Council is keen to see this site developed, both as a venue for events and as an employment generator for our community.”

Deputy Mayor Cr Brett Owen said he was pleased Council could now provide some certainty around permanent accommodation for the Pakenham Auto Club and Koo Wee Rup Motorcycle Club, providing the sale of the land proceeds.

“These two clubs have been looking for certainty around their future, and Council’s decision to allocate the proceeds from the sale to find them a permanent home is a great outcome,” he said.

Council has given public notice of the proposal in accordance with its obligations under the Local Government Act 1989.

Subject to the receipt of any submissions, Council will hold a Special Council Meeting on Monday 9 July commencing at 7.00pm to hear any submissions. A meeting to determine whether to sell the land after consideration of any submissions will be held on Monday 23 July commencing at 7.00pm.
