Speak Up Information Session in support of WEAAD
'Speak up’ is a free community information session designed to support older people to stay informed, feel confident and heard.
Cardinia Shire Council is hosting the session in partnership with Elder Rights Australia to help older residents better understand their rights, recognise elder abuse and know where to get support.
The session will cover important topics including family violence, financial abuse and the misuse of powers of attorney, recognising the signs of elder abuse, understanding individual rights and staying in control of personal care decisions.
Participants will also gain practical tips to help them speak up with confidence and learn where to access trusted support services.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy refreshments, browse information stalls and speak directly with presenters and service providers.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Brett Owen said the session was an important initiative to support the safety and wellbeing of older members of the community.
“Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and empowered, particularly as they age,” Mayor Owen said.
“This session brings together trusted organisations to provide clear, practical information and create a welcoming space where older people can ask questions, share experiences and learn about the support available to them.”
The free community information session will be held on Tuesday 16 June from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the Deep Creek Reserve Centre, 62 Cameron Way, Pakenham. A light lunch will be provided.
This event supports World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), recognised globally on 15 June each year.
