Plans to reimagine Officer’s iconic kiln site are now on public exhibition

Cardinia Shire Council is exhibiting proposed Planning Scheme Amendment C282card and planning permit (T230528), offering a renewed future for the historic James Hicks pottery site in Officer.

Planning Scheme Amendment C282card (the Amendment) submitted by Nobelius Land Surveyors on behalf of James Hicks Pottery Site Pty Ltd, seeks to enable an office space at the James Hicks pottery site in Officer, also known as the Officer Kiln site.

The Amendment is being exhibited alongside planning permit application (T230528) required for the proposed development of the site. If approved, the proposal would convert the unused heritage site, into a commercial hub with an office, cafe, restaurant/wine bar, and car park. The development aims to deliver social, economic and sustainability benefits for the region while preserving the site’s rich heritage.

The Officer Kiln site has a long history associated with the manufacturing of terracotta building materials as part of James Hicks Pty Ltd Pipe and Bricks Works. The site’s distinctive brick kiln, chimney structures and disused clay pit, are proposed to be retained and incorporated into the development. The proposed Amendment also allows for the ongoing protection and maintenance of the Kiln, noting that future uses of heritage places such as this are currently limited under the Officer Precinct Structure Plan.
