Lang Lang’s newest art sculpture gallops towards completion

Cardinia Shire Council has been working to develop an iconic art piece that best showcases Lang Lang’s rich equine and rodeo history.
Following an extensive EOI process, Adam Humphreys was selected to create the new art piece. Adam is a sculpture artist specialising in equine and figurative pieces, working in mild steel, weld and bronze.
Speaking to his design and practice, Adam says “Horses underpin my personal life, and I have been approached for predominantly equestrian based commissions throughout my sculpting career.”
“Studying the equine form and its expressive movement is one of my life’s joys” he adds.
Adam’s passion for equine and rodeo is vividly reflected in his design. He has thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to meet and connect with Lang Lang locals whose stories and enthusiasm have further inspired his work and deepened his commitment to capturing the spirit of the Rodeo community in his artwork.
The piece will include three galloping horses that appear to be running wild as a small herd on first glance. However, as described by the artist “on closer inspection it would reveal horses mimicking the movements seen in rodeo; including a bronc, a barrel racer and a roping horse.”
Following the 19 May Council meeting, Council voted in favour to locate the sculpture at the preferred location of Thwaites Park, with contingency sites of Westernport Road and McDonalds Track, should approvals not be received by the relevant state departments. These contingency sites were identified by the nominated Arts and Culture Reference Group Councillors in collaboration with the Ward Councillor.
“Public art has the power to enrich our community town centres and pay homage to a town’s unique community identity, and that’s exactly what this piece aims to do for Lang Lang,” said Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jack Kowarzik.
“This equine inspired piece celebrates the community’s passion for horses and will serve as a fitting nod to the long running Lang Lang Rodeo.
“I want to thank our community for their input into this project and for the patience shown as we finalise the sculpture. We look forward to seeing this piece come to life and welcome this great investment for Lang Lang”.
