- Large clumping perennial sedge.

- 2-3m x 1.5-3m
- Leaves
- Leaves spiralling and sheathing around stem, long, to 2.5m, channelled and rough, becoming pendulous.
- Flowers
- Dense flower spike 30-100cm x 70mm. Nuts bright red and shiny.
- Flower colour
- Yellowish-brown becoming black
- Flower time
- October to January
- Growing conditions
- Moist to wet alluvial soil in low areas of mountain and foothill forests. Frost tolerant. Full sun to full shade.
- Commonly used for
- Large clump which does not spread. Nuts are very attractive against the black spikes. Important food plant for the Swordgrass Brown butterfly. Excellent habitat plant.
