- Tufted perennial herb with a bulb-like tuber and fleshy roots.

- Leaves
- Erect grey-green to reddish, hollow, fleshy, channelled to almost round rush-like leaves to 30cm x 1-5mm
- Flowers
- 1-2 erect flowering stems with a terminal yellow spike of star-shaped flowers to 20mm wide. Stamens bearded. Round straw-coloured capsules.

- Growing conditions
- Moist to well drained soils in a range of habitats including seasonally wet areas, moist rocky slopes and forests. Frost and snow tolerant. Full sun, semi to dappled shade.
- Commonly used for
- A cheery yellow lily for planting in drifts, amongst rocks or in cottage gardens. Generally dies back after flowering but can continue to grow and flower in moist conditions.
