Doing things differently this IDAHOBIT in Cardinia Shire

Published: 7 May 2020

The Cardinia Shire community is invited to share a rainbow creation and their stories for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) 2020!

IDAHOBIT (17 May 2020) celebrates our global LGBTIQ+ community and raises awareness for the work still needed to increase acceptance and reduce discrimination.

This year, the day marks the special 30th anniversary of the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems in 1990.

Cardinia Shire community members are encouraged to celebrate this milestone and participate in the IDAHOBIT 2020 community project online at www.cardinia.vic.gov.au/ConnectingCardinia, by:

  1. Creating and submitting a short, 30-second video of “why it is important for you to celebrate IDAHOBIT” by 5pm, Monday 11 May 2020. Video submissions may be included in a Cardinia Shire YouTube video recognising the day and what it means to our community.
  2. Creating and sharing a photo of their own rainbow creations in support of all LGBTIQ+ people in Cardinia Shire between 11–24 May 2020.

Some ways people can ‘go rainbow’ for IDAHOBIT 2020 include: wearing rainbow, making rainbow food creations, creating drawings/paintings, putting up rainbow posters or decorations at home, rainbow garden art, photography, poetry, etc.

Additionally, people can choose to support programs that help LGBTIQ+ young people in Australia by donating to IDAHOBIT or taking the pledge:

"I pledge to never stay silent about homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia. I will always stand with my LGBTI mates. I am part of the solution."

Council recognises that many people in our community are struggling at the moment, and is offering a range of services to help those in need. This activity is one of many occurring across the shire to help those who are struggling with isolation and are in vulnerable situations.
