Cardinia schools are in it to win it this Mobile March
Cardinia Shire Council has partnered with Aligned Leisure to promote Mobile March in 2018 and encourage local students to be active when travelling to school this month.
Now in its eighth year in Cardinia Shire, the campaign aims to increase physical activity in children through awareness, education, competition and prizes.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said participating in Mobile March and Bicycle Network’s National Ride2School Day on Friday 23 March is a great way for children to discover the benefits of being active and for families to consider how they can incorporate active travel into their morning and afternoon routines.
“During March, students from participating primary schools in Cardinia Shire will commit to walking, riding, skateboarding, or scooting to school where possible. Getting to school in an active way offers so many benefits, from being social with family members and peers, to expending energy and jumpstarting the brain for a day of learning,” said Cr Ross.
“Last year 15 of our local schools registered to participate in Mobile March, with more than 5,500 students getting involved. We would love to see this number increase in 2018!”
For schools where active travel is a challenge, teachers will be encouraging and supporting children to participate in laps around the football ovals or basketball courts, so that everyone can get active.
Families that usually drive to school might consider parking the car at a designated Stop and drop zone or a short distance from school and walking the rest of the way.
Each day, teachers at participating primary schools will tally the students who were active as part of the program and participating students will be in the running to win some great prizes. Every school that participates will receive five family swim passes at Cardinia Life in Pakenham.
The most active school will win the ‘Streets Ahead Cup’ and water safety classes for the whole school, covering topics such as water safety in the home and at the beach, swimming between the flags, and rescue activities.
Cardinia Leisure Manager, Simon Bryson said the Active Families initiative running throughout Mobile March provides even more chances for families to be active and win.
“We are proud to be working with Council for Mobile March and running our Active Families initiative. The program encourages families to be active together and participating families will go in the draw to win one of four $50 fuel vouchers or one of three $100 Coles vouchers,” said Mr Bryson.
“There are so many ways to be active together – walk, ride, scoot or skate to school, a local park or the shops, walk the dog, enjoy a team sport, or go dancing or swimming!”
