Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jack Kowarzik encouraged residents to celebrate Cardinia Shire’s local legends by nominating them for an award.
“Each year, the Australia Day Awards honour the exceptional efforts of citizens and community events that have enriched community life here in Cardinia Shire.
“With nominations now open, this is your chance to recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals and community events that have made a significant impact on our community,” Mayor Kowarzik said.
Dual recipients of the Cardinia Shire Australia Day Awards’ 2025 Citizen of the Year Award, David and Julia Graham, reflected on receiving their award last year and encourage Cardinia Shire residents to nominate a local volunteer in this last week of nominations.
“It's been lovely to be recognised by the people we work with in the community and as a reward for helping those who are in need,” David said.
"We’d encourage everyone in the community to nominate a local volunteer or group for an award. It’s a great way to encourage them in the work they're doing and to encourage others who might be considering volunteering. There are so many things happening around the Shire that wouldn't happen if we didn't have volunteers and the awards help recognise the value of volunteering in the community.”
