Our weed initiatives

We have a number of programs that help landowners tackle weeds, including grants, weed identification days and community projects including the Hills Ragwort Action Project.

Our Weed Control Grants are open to any landowner or manager of private property to help control weeds on their property and across property boundaries. Environmental groups can also apply.

The 2019–29 Weed Management Strategy aims to reduce weed infestations in public and private bushland, roadsides and waterways across Cardinia Shire. These infestations threaten agriculture, human health and the environment.

The strategy outlines how Council, the community and organisations should work together to manage weeds across all land, regardless of ownership.

Cardinia Shire has 400 species of weeds. 36 are declared species under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994, and 8 are weeds of national significance.

Weedbusters week is a national program held annually in the first week of September.

During Weedbusters Week, we hold activities around Cardinia Shire to raise awareness about the effect weeds can have on the environment, and the social and economic impact on the community.

Activities have included weed identification days where residents can swap weeds from their properties for native plants.
