Cardinia Road Level Crossing Removal Project      Pakenham Level Crossing Removal Project

About

  • As part of the Victorian Government’s Cardinia Level Crossing Removal Project, the Cardinia Road, Pakenham level crossing is currently being removed and a road bridge is being built.
  • The shared user path on the eastern side of Cardinia Road and pedestrian crossings near the level crossing will be closed from 24 November 2019 until 2021.This will help keep pedestrians, cyclists and the project workers safe during construction. There will be detour signage in place to safely guide pedestrians around the area.
  • Residents and businesses in the local area will be notified about works by the Cardinia Level Crossing Removal Project team.

About

As part of the Victorian Government's Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), these 3 level crossings in Pakenham will be removed as part of a single project:

new Pakenham Station is also being built, which will include:

  • better bus connections
  • more car parking
  • a third platform and dedicated V/Line track, for an easier interchange with regional services.

Project design

While LXRP are still in the planning stages for these sites, their early investigations suggest the most likely design to remove the three level crossings would be to raise the rail line over the road.

A rail over road design may create opportunities for local connections in some sections under the rail line, provide increased open space and minimise disruption to road and train users during construction.

Project timelines

Site investigations, design development and community consultation will continue this year, with a view to complete the project by 2025.

Our involvement

Council is a key stakeholder in this project and will work with LXRP to advocate for the community.
