Native plant and voucher giveaway

  • We’re partnering with the Cardinia Environment Coalition Nursery to give away 5 free native plants to the first 320 Cardinia Shire households to take up the offer from Friday 14 April to Friday 30 June (or while stocks last).
  • From Monday 6 March 2023, schools, kindergartens, community groups and owners of properties more than 4000 square metres can also apply for a native plant voucher, which gives them $50 towards native plants from the Cardinia Environment Coalition Nursery. You can apply for a voucher further down this page.  
  • This program is being offered to help ‘green’ Cardinia Shire with plant species that are indigenous to the area, as these plants enhance biodiversity and our shire’s natural environment.

Plants are available from 9am to noon on Fridays from Friday 14 April until Friday 30 June (or while stocks last) at:

Proof of residency is required. 

Schools, kindergartens, community groups and owners of properties more than 4000 square metres can apply for a native plant voucher, which gives them $50 towards native plants from the Cardinia Environment Coalition Nursery.  

Voucher holders can choose from a selection of indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses as tube stock.  

Plants can be collected from the nursery once vouchers have been issued.  

There are only a limited number of vouchers, so get in quickly! Applications open 9am on Monday 6 March, until stocks last.

Where to redeem your voucher 

Once you have received your voucher, plants can be collected from:

Deep Creek Reserve 
End of Cameron Way, Pakenham 

if you are unable to attend the nursery during retail hours, please email the nursery with your voucher and phone number and staff can provide information to help you select the most appropriate plants for your garden. 

Please read these conditions before applying 

  • Vouchers can only be used for the purchase of indigenous plants.   
  • Indigenous plant species on offer will depend on what is available at CEC Nursery when the voucher is redeemed. 
  • Where plants are planted on roadsides or on land not owned by the applicant, you must get written permission from Council or the landowner before planting. This permission MUST be included in your application. 
  • Plant crates and tubes must be returned to the nursery for reuse. 
  • Vouchers are strictly limited. Once allocated funds have been exhausted, applications will close. 
  • Applicants must supply labor for site preparation, planting, weed control, and ongoing maintenance of the site. 

Apply for a plant voucher

The wonderful volunteers at the CEC nursery will also be able to assist you.

  • Site preparation is important and may include: 
    • weed control  
    • spot spraying with suitable herbicide 
    • loosening of ground if area is compacted. 
    • mulching the planting area to a depth of 75mm 
  • Trees are usually best planted 2 metres apart. Shrubs and understorey can be planted closer. 
  • Smaller trees/shrubs are best planted near fences. 
  • When deciding what to plant, think about how you want to maintain the area into the future.
