News>New Council officer has fire focus
| Media release: 2 November 2009 | | Cardinia Shire Council has appointed Tanya Winn to help residents and our most vulnerable communities enhance community resilience and prepare for the fire season.
Tanya has a wealth of experience in rural fire service organisations across Australia and emergency management over a 20 year period and has ‘hit the ground running’.
She is already attending community bushfire meetings and will be a regular presence at township meetings, particularly where fire preparation is a focus, between now and Christmas.
Tanya’s role over the next six months will be to raise awareness in the community about bushfire preparedness.
She is part of a wider Council team working to support the CFA and emergency services and strengthen community capacity across the Shire.
Mayor Cr Bill Pearson said Tanya’s diverse training and experience in Victoria and other States in a range of emergency situations, starting in the Ash Wednesday fires, drive her commitment to supporting Cardinia Shire residents.
“Tanya provides another important resource to bushfire preparedness and will work with Cardinia Shire residents to build their confidence, capacity and knowledge about how to survive bushfires,” said Cr Pearson.
Tanya said: “It’s important for people to understand where they can go for information and assistance, to feel confident processing the information and practice their plans so they can act calmly and efficiently should an emergency occur.”
“The most important message for people is to be well prepared and act early. Council wants the community, especially those in vulnerable areas, to feel confident about their emergency preparations and decisions.
“If people make the decision to leave early in a fire, they should have everything ready in advance. While there are no hard and fast rules about what to take, important items for key family members such as babies or pets should be packaged together into a box or container now so they are ready in case of an emergency.
“I look forward to meeting with community groups and supporting the work being undertaken by the CFA,” Tanya added.
