Barking dogs can be a nuisance to your neighbours. Constant barking means your dog is bored, lonely or frustrated. Dogs are a lot happier when they get plenty of exercise, companionship and have a comfortable and safe place to sleep.

| Anti-barking collars
Council's Local Laws department has anti-barking collars for hire which are extremely effective in solving this bad habit. If you are interested in hiring a collar , please phone Local Laws on 1300 787 624.
What do I do to stop a dog from barking?
The best approach is usually to speak to the owners of the dog to make them aware the dog is causing a nuisance.
In most cases the owner is not at home when the dog is barking so is unaware that there is a problem. Just letting them know can give the owner a chance to do something about the barking.
We have found that most people prefer to be approached personally. This gives you a chance to negotiate and help solve the problem mutually.
If the problem persists
If you find that talking to the neighbour has not helped, then it's time to report the matter to our Local Laws Unit.
To lodge a formal complaint with Local Laws you will need to give us your name, address and phone number. These personal details are kept confidential and are only used by Council to keep you informed about what we are doing about your complaint.
We will also require the address of the property where the barking dog lives and a description of the dog to proceed with the matter further.
Next you will need to fill in a noise diary for a 2-3 week period detailing time of day and/or night and the length of time the dog is barking.
If the noise ceases to your approval you are not required to return the noise diary, however if it still continues send the diary back to Council for the Local Law Officers to follow up.
