Part 24 Open Air Burning and Incinerators Cardinia Shire Council has adopted a policy in regard to open air burning. Click to view or download the Open air burning policy.
| | | |
| The policy position adopted by Council, delineates three specific zones for each township in Cardinia Shire. For information about which open air burning zone your property is in, please contact Council's Customer Service Centre on 1300 787 624.
Zone 1 – no open air burning permitted, without a permit
Zone 2 – open air burning for fuel reduction or fire prevention permitted Thursday, Friday and Saturday between 9 am – 5 pm, excluding CFA declared Fire Prevention Period, Total Fire Ban Days and EPA declared smog alert days.
Zone 3 – open air burning permitted for fuel reduction or fire prevention during daylight hours except Sundays (unless burning is for agricultural production requirements ) excluding CFA declared Fire Prevention Period, Total Fire Ban Days and EPA declared smog alert days.
The policy also provides details relating to:
| guidelines on how to burn with less smoke and what not to burn | | alternatives to burning including green and hard waste collection | | CFA summer fire restrictions and how to burn safely | | health and environmental concerns with burning. |
|
|
| While it is acknowledged that open air burning is a cause for concern to many residents, this needs to be balanced with the threat of a bushfire and that open air burning is a strategy that is encouraged by fire authorities for fire prevention reasons. The policy proposed is considered to provide a balance in regard to these issues.
The recent introduction of a green waste collection service has resulted in a noticeable reduction in open air burning. Once residents have dealt with the summer accumulation and begin to routinely use the green waste service then further reductions in burning are expected to occur. Currently the green waste service is collecting 160 tonnes of material per month, much of which may have been burnt in the past.
Additionally with the introduction of the bi-annual kerbside hard and green waste collection service residents will have even greater opportunity to dispose of green waste without the need to burn in the open.
| Reporting an offence | | If you wish to burn off on other days than specified in the above Local Law, you must apply for a permit to burn. These can be obtained by contacting Council on 1300 787 624.
If you wish to report a person illegally burning off, please contact Council on the above number or email Council.
