| Council's Building Unit performs a statutory role to ensure that obligations under the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2006 are enforced.
The unit has a staff of three: the municipal building surveyor, an essential service consultant and an administration officer.
The municipal building surveyor's responsibilities include inspections of properties that have swimming pool and/or spa barriers to ensure compliance with the legislation and periodic auditing of essential service items in buildings such as smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, exit signs and other safety measures.
This is paramount for the effective function of the building and to ensure protection of building occupants and the public. Other functions of the unit include: following up customer complaints, council dispensations (e.g. building over easements, Rescode variations, flood prone land etc), site inspections of remaining council issued permits and customer enquires.
