Council’s Economic Development Unit works with existing agribusinesses to improve their capacity to grow, as well as working to attract new agribusiness ventures into the Shire. The unit also assists local agricultural organisations to advocate for change in order to maximise the sector’s sustainability.

| Vegetables | | On the rolling hills and broad fertile plains are grown diverse crops from potatoes to asparagus, onion and garlic. The rich, loamy, friable soil is well watered and drained, with rainfall and/or irrigation. Increasing number of growers are moving to organic farming. Cardinia supplies the bulk of Australian asparagus (which has been certified as 99.9% chemical free) for export. Cardinia also now offers the only onion drying and granulating processing plant in Australia, with potential for other crops. | |
| Wine | | The climate, soils and rainfall of Cardinia provide the right mix for both red and white wine production. Boutique wineries are leading the charge in discovering the potential.

One of Cardinia’s growers, Ausflora Pacific, supplied all the native flowers for the Sydney Olympics.
