Home>Maintaining Cardinia's assets (infrastructure)>Roads>Builders Crossing Permit
| In response to the rising bill from damage to naturestrips, footpaths and kerb and channel during home building, the council has introduced a ‘crossing permit’ as part of it’s Asset Protection system.
Local Law No. 3 states that you are required to apply for a permit to install a temporary vehicle crossing to protect public assets and reduce the risk of possible injury to the public.
Property owners are required to lodge a bond of $728 and a fee of $187 prior to the building starting, that covers crossing permits and inspections for material storage, environmental controls and toilet facilities. Once a building permit has been applied for the property owners are notified of the crossing permit requirement. A pre-inspection report is carried out to see if there is any damage already evident. Once the building is finished there is another inspection. If no damage has been done, the $728 bond is returned.
It is recommended that property owners and builders use a temporary crossing board to enhance the protection of the driveway and surrounding area. (see picture above)
The onus is on the property owner to comply with the local law and penalties of up to $2000 may be applied if building has commenced and a permit has not been obtained.
The permit system also protects people building a home from costly repairs to their own driveways as well as council assets. Random inspections of building sites throughout the shire are conducted regularly, so anyone about to commence building should be aware and make sure they have a permit before the contractor starts the job.
Further enquiries can be made to Council on 1300 787 624.
