Car parking an early Christmas gift for Pakenham  Printer Friendly

Media release: 2 November 2009

Shopping in Pakenham just got easier, with the Treloar Lane car park staying open at least until Christmas in a win-win outcome for shoppers and traders, Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Bill Pearson announced today.

The car park had been expected to close in October to make way for the new retail precinct in John Street which will include underground and street level parking spaces for up to 1,108 cars.

Cr Pearson said successful negotiations between Council and the retail precinct developer Fabcorp Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Woolworths, had led to an agreement to keep a minimum of 150 spaces in the car park open until after the busy festive season.

“This is a great result as it means the development of this exciting new retail precinct will not impact on Christmas trading, traditionally the busiest time of year for Pakenham businesses,” Cr Pearson said.

“Shoppers can continue to park their cars in Treloar Lane and will also be able to use the additional off street car parking areas opened up by Council in the past several weeks.

There is now a combined total of 430 car parking spaces available in these areas.

“So there is currently plenty of parking in Pakenham and in the long term it’s only going to get better.”

The additional off-street car parks are at the following locations:

corner of Henry Street and Cook Drive (150 spaces)
corner of Henry and John streets (35 spaces)
land in Treloar Lane (25 spaces)
 PB Ronald Reserve (70 spaces)

“Council is in the process of securing further car parking sites and will provide updates as these become available. We will continue to work closely with the Pakenham Business Group, business operators and the wider community,” Cr Pearson said.

A new Woolworths supermarket, a Big W department store and specialty shops are features of the new retail precinct to be developed on the 2.9 hectare parcel of land bounded by John Street, Henry Street, Cook Drive and Treloar Lane.

Cr Pearson said the development is expected to create up to 700 new jobs along with a host of expanded shopping opportunities.
