News>Cardinia General Manager appointed Ambassador
| Media release: 13 October 2009 | | Cardinia Shire Council General Manager for Community Wellbeing Fiona Hodges is one of three Victorian women named as an Ambassador for the Year of Women in Local Government 2010.
The National Steering Committee named 21 women across Australia as ambassadors.
The other two in Victoria were Cr Yvonne Jennings from Swan Hill Rural City Council and Ms Noelene Duff, CEO of the City of Whitehorse.
Ms Hodges was chosen from 60 ‘outstanding’ nominations.
“These ambassadors provide a great representation of the varied roles and responsibilities that exist within local government,” said Steering Committee Chairman Ray Pincombe.
“Each Ambassador is committed to promoting the advancement of women within the sector, both in management and at the council level and they have great stories to tell about their own personal journeys in local government,” he added.
Currently, women in senior management roles in local government represent only 20 per cent of the local government workforce; a representation that has not changed since 1996.
Only 5 per cent of chief executives or general managers are women and women represent less than 30 per cent of all elected members.
Mayor Cr Bill Pearson congratulated Ms Hodges on her appointment and described it as a credit to the effective work being done by Ms Hodges in one of the most important areas of Council operations.
“Fiona Hodges is a wonderful role model for all women in our community,” said Cr Pearson.
“Her ‘can do’ approach enables her to successfully manage her family life and Council commitments in a calm and inspiring way.”
“Her appointment as an Ambassador for a Year of Women in Local Government 2010 lifts the profile of the Cardinia Shire across Australia as an employer of choice,” added Cr Pearson.
