Media release: 8 October 2009

The Cardinia Road Safety Expo and Children’s Day on 24 October will be a fantastic day of family fun to open Children’s Week (24-30 October).

The aim is to promote road safety and physical activity for children.

A major Council coordinated event, the Expo is supported by VicRoads, Victoria Police, SES and CFA, the Best Start Partnership and Parks Victoria.

The Road Safety Expo has moved to the Cardinia Cultural Centre this year, from PB Ronald Reserve to combine the two events.

Emergency and children’s service displays, a trackless train running around the outside of the cultural centre, the Police helicopter, Police showband, an activities trail, jumping castle, sausage sizzle, giveaways and more are all part of the day’s activities.

Mayor Cr Bill Pearson said the Road Safety Expo aims to raise awareness of the importance of being safe on our roads and reducing injuries from road trauma.

“By combining the Road Safety Expo and Children’s Day, a fun-filled and informative family outing is on offer,” said Cr Pearson.

“We are doing all we can to encourage awareness of road safety and healthy lifestyles for children and families,” he added.

The Expo is also an opportunity for parents to gather information about services for their children in the Shire, especially children aged between 0–8 years old.

“Local community groups are participating with a range of activities encouraging physical activity and healthy eating habits,” said Cr Pearson.

Children’s Services Co-ordinate, Jackie Sahely said Council listened to feedback from children about what they want at the day.

“The trackless train and pony rides were added to meet their requests and other activities include dance lessons, sack races, pot planting, paper plane races and delicious fruit skewers for eating,” she added.

CFA Brigade support officer Lisa Hicks said the Road Safety Expo is also an opportunity for young people and adults to meet emergency services officers and learn about their work and volunteering for the CFA or SES,” she added.

A drawcard will also be the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) simulator sponsored by the RACV, VicRoads, TAC and Bosch.

Leading Senior Constable Matthew Pietzsch from Cardinia Police Traffic Management Unit said the simulator offers a real life experience about one of the most important safety features in motor vehicles, the safety feature that helps prevent crashes by stabilising vehicles when they begin to skid.”
