News>Council cleaning up for fire season
| Media release: 2 October 2009 | | Fire prevention is a priority for Cardinia Shire Council as summer approaches and residents have been urged to take extra care this year to make their own properties safe.
Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator Paul Dickson said Council has a detailed program of actions which contribute to the Shire’s fire safety.
Staff from across Council are acting to clear fuels from roadsides, parks and reserves and to ensure vacant and unimproved private properties are fire safe.
“We are also active in encouraging the community to prepare themselves and their properties for bushfires, and supporting our CFA colleagues in their endeavours,” Mr Dickson said.
In the lead up to the fire season, Council and its contractors slash every road in the Shire – where possible 5 metres either side of the road – more than 1300 kilometres of roads.
In November, Council starts its annual inspection of vacant and unimproved properties and issues notices to property owners to address fire hazards.
If owners do not address fire hazards within the time limit, Council may arrange for contractors to perform the necessary work and invoice the property owner.
As part of its regular maintenance program Council also identifies and addresses fire hazards in parks and reserves.
