Community Atlas gives insights into Cardinia Shire’s people’s lives  Printer Friendly

Media release: 25 September 2009

A new and improved Community Atlas which provides statistical maps of Cardinia Shire can now be viewed through Cardinia Shire Council’s website.

The maps in the atlas provide a visual representation of statistics about people living in Cardinia Shire and they way they live.

It includes statistical variables such as age, ethnicity, travel to work methods, education levels, household type, income and access to the internet.

Council’s Manager of Strategic Planning, John Holland said the resource is an important tool which is used in planning for the future needs of the Shire’s growing community.

“The atlas has been developed to assist Council with its planning processes and simplifies the process of tracking the changing needs in our different shire communities.

“We hope that by making the atlas available to the community, online, they will be able to use it for their own planning,” Mr Holland said.

The Atlas illustrates some interesting information about the people living in Cardinia Shire an example being: the median age in the Growth Area of the shire (Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield) is 25 to 29 years old, while in the rural areas of the shire the median age is 40 years of age.

There are 59 maps in the online Community Atlas, which are created using information from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Census of Population and Housing, 2006.

The Community Atlas as been developed by id. Consulting (informed decisions), Council’s consultant demographers.

The website is very user friendly with the maps being able to be downloaded into word documents.

“This is a great resource for people who may be doing research on Cardinia Shire whether for business, grant applications or even school and university assignments,” Mr Holland said.

The Cardinia Shire Community Atlas can be found by choosing Statistics from the left menu of Council’s home page and choosing Community Atlas.
