| Media release: 24 September 2009 | | Cardinia Shire’s Asparagus Harvest Celebration is set to get underway at Cardinia Ranges Farmers’ Market on Saturday 10 October.
This annual spring event will be held at Pakenham Racecourse, Racecourse Road, Pakenham from 8am until midday.
Dalmore, Kooweerup, Bayles and surrounding farmland is the heart of Cardinia Shire’s asparagus country.
Asparagus farmers have just started hand cutting the bright green snap fresh asparagus shoots that are destined for local and export markets.
Second generation organic asparagus farmers Trevor and Joanne Courtney from Bridge Farm are set to bring top quality NASSA accredited asparagus along with John Hanen from Hanens Asparagus in Bayles.
“We’ll be picking asparagus around the clock in October. If you love asparagus you won’t be disappointed,” John Hanen said. “This season’s asparagus is to top quality perfect for the barbie.”
An initiative of Cardinia Shire Council and local farmers, Saturday’s farmers’ market will be abuzz with activities for the whole family, including the Asparagus Councils delicious cooking demonstrations, master Little Cooks in the Kitchen cooking classes and asparagus races.
Visitors to the market can also discover the range of new season’s locally grown and produced foods including free range eggs, scrumptious cakes, award winning local wines and olive oils, farmhouse cheeses, fresh baked bread and a whole lot more. Entry to the farmers market is a gold coin donation which supports Toomuc Valley CFA’s fundraising efforts as part of the markets program to support local community organisations.
