| Media release: 15 September 2009 | | Seventeen students undertaking year ten or equivalent participated in the Cardinia Shire Council’s Young Leaders program during the last two weeks of August 2009. The students were from seven local secondary schools Emerald Secondary, Drouin Secondary, Koo Wee Rup Secondary, Heritage College, Chairo Christian College, Oz Child community VCAL, and LLINC.
Council’s Youth Development Officer Kerrie Loveless said the week-long Young Leaders program further develops the leadership skills of participants.
“Topics which were covered in the program included public speaking, team work, confidence, problem-solving and self-esteem,” she said.
“The participants impressed us with their hard work, passion and interest in all the topics.”
“They also showed they could work well with different people, forming new friendships with other young people from across the shire who shared similar ideas and interests.”
The students were able to further build on their public speaking skills when they presented to peers, Councillors, friends and family at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on 25 August.
We had some fantastic presentations including a mock game show about leadership and a play which gave a new twist to classic fairytales with the three little pigs talking about leadership styles and goldilocks exploring values and diversity. “The presentations were well received by all who attended,” Ms Loveless said.
