| Media release: 15 September 2009 | | Cardinia Shire Council has recently finished facilitating an arts program for the Emerald Junior Football and Cricket Clubs with a group of 15 year 8 students from Emerald Secondary College.
Students worked alongside a professional artist Tara Kingston, and Cardinia Shire Council Youth Recreation Officer Leonie Olsen to produce a joint piece of aerosol art that represented both the junior football and cricket clubs, which was then painted on the exterior wall of the building.
The art program was held each Wednesday during the school term from 20 May 2009 until 5 August 2009.
“Young people learnt a variety of art forms including stencil making, painting and design,” Ms Olsen said.
“The program aims to provide young people with skills in advocacy, decision making, project planning, dealing with conflict, negotiation, budgeting and communication,”
A recognition event to celebrate the completion of the program, was held on Wednesday 26 August 2009 at the Emerald junior football and cricket club rooms located at Worrell Reserve, Belgrave-Gembrook Road Emerald.
Local Councillor Graham Legg presented young people with a certificate and family, friends and community representatives all enjoyed a meal which was prepared by the young people.
Participants in the program were Ryan Crowley, Hayden Jones, Joel Eastwood, Taylor Strathdee, Isabella Sweetman-Wood, Kim Dearing, Steph Krapez, Jayme Lees, Chelsea Davy, Michelle Tolmie, Zack Holland, Jordon Goughlan, Whitney Rapisarda, Luke Haylock and Jacob Knees.
Mr Winston Gate president of Emerald Junior Football Club was extremely impressed with the final art piece and said the design was youth friendly and represented both cricket and football clubs that use the reserve.
