News>SHARE benefits
| Media release: 10 September 2009 | | SHARE is a unique, highly visual and interactive program featuring the coolest teddy bear in town, a soft furry friend named TED – an acronym that describes a primary aim of the SHARE program - ‘Treat Everyone Decently.’
The program is the only one of its kind in the southern metropolitan region and to date, the Department of Human Services has funded the program.
After visiting eleven schools in the Casey - Cardinia Region, TED is now a familiar friend to the 1800 students who have met him, heard his message and chatted with his four favourite friends who live with disabilities.
Cardinia Shire Council hope TED will visit more schools soon and make many more young friends.
Marcia Cadoret, MetroAccess Officer at Cardinia Shire Council said accepting difference and belonging to an inclusive community is an important goal for every community. “Understanding and tolerance has profound effects on the daily lives of people with disabilities. Their lives are enhanced and communities are enriched as their abilities are appreciated and they are welcomed into community life,” Ms Cadoret said.
“Everyone likes to feel respected,
“The earlier difference is understood the easier it is to accept and enjoy people who seem ‘different,” said Ms Cadoret.
“It’s an important part of community building and the future strength and character of our Shire,” said Ms Cadoret.
