News>Graffitti Declining
| Media release: 2 September 2009 | | The community’s response to the ‘Report, Remove, Reduce’ graffiti campaign over the last year appears to be paying off.
A recent audit of graffiti across the Shire of Cardinia revealed a 66% reduction overall with only 311 new incidents since last year’s audit.
Chairman of the Cardinia Shire Reference Group, Cr Brett Owen confirmed this great result and indicated the overall incidence of graffiti in our Shire is low compared to many other municipalities because of Council’s proactive approach to tackling graffiti issues.
“The ‘Report, Remove and Reduce’ campaign will continue along with other graffiti prevention programs in partnership with traders, the community and Victoria Police,” said Cr Owen.
“I encourage everyone in the community to continue their vigilance in helping Council identify new incidents as they occur so they can be removed quickly,” he added
Sgt Graham Higginbotham, Victoria Police representative on the Graffiti Reference Group supported Cr Owen’s comments.
“Graffiti free public places have positive impacts on people’s perceptions of local safety and their visual impressions of townships,” he said.
Richard Maugueret, Councils Community Safety Officer said another Shire wide clean up is scheduled for September as part of Council’s commitment to reducing and containing further incidents of graffiti throughout the Shire.
“We encourage the community to contact Council as soon as they are affected by new graffiti to take advantage of the free graffiti removal kits and paint vouchers.”
Cardinia Shire Council funded the Shire wide audit. The National Community Crime Prevention Program (Government of Australia) continues to fund associated prevention projects.
