News>Weed busters coming – 7 September – 13 September
| Media release: 27 August 2009 | | Get your garden tools ready because Weedbusters Week is coming up! From 7 – 13 September, residents in Cardinia Shire are encouraged to join the ‘war’ on woody weeds.
Weeds such as sweet pittosporum, flax leafed broom, cotoneaster and holly are amongst the environmental pests impacting on local environments.
To encourage ‘weed busters’ in the community, Council is offering a limited number of free tip vouchers, valid from September to November.
“Special bundled green waste kerbside collections will also be provided during Weedbusters Week.
However, it is essential to make a booking for the extra collection,” said Ms Sawyer.
As part of Weed Busters Week, Cardinia Council will also host a Weed information stand outside Emerald library on Saturday 12 September from 10-12pm.
Bring along a bag of garden weeds and receive a free replacement plant! Booklets and handouts also available.
“Woody weeds are a curse to our local environment,” said Marianne Sawyer, Weed and Landcare Project Officer at Cardinia Shire Council.
“When residents remove these environmental pests from their properties, they are doing their bit to help protect the local environment.
“With the next fire season looming their removal could also form part of fire reduction regimes on vulnerable properties,” she added.
Cardinia Council has a range of pamphlets on woody weeds available from the Shire Offices to help resident identify the weeds and eradicate them.
To receive a free tip voucher, register for a kerbside collection of bundled weeds or obtain pamphlets on woody weeds, telephone 1300 787 624 or call into the Shire Offices in Henty Way, Pakenham.
