News>Spruce up the garden
| Media release: 27 August 2009 | | Spring composting workshops, a plant bonanza and cut flowers are sure to fire up local green thumbs at Cardinia Ranges Farmers’ Market on Saturday morning 12 September.
Well known for the huge range of spring flowering and drought resistant plants offered at great budget deals at this time of year, the market is held at Pakenham Racecourse, Racecourse Road from 8am until midday.
“Cardinia’s Community Harvest group, together with the Transition Towns group, will present workshops on how to compost your home or school garden waste to maintain a flourishing garden,” says workshops organiser Abbie Lane.
“If you have leftover fuzzy things in the back of the fridge and green and dry waste from the garden, then come along to the farmers’ market, join in the workshops and learn how to start or improve your own compost pile,” said Ms Lane. It is also time to mark the annual harvest and Asparagus Celebration on 10 October in your diary, a day when asparagus will be centre stage.
The annual Asparagus Celebration is an initiative of Cardinia Shire Council and local farmers.
The event brings together asparagus farmers, talented chefs and keen consumers who have waited eagerly for the first crop of asparagus to arrive.
A gold coin entry donation to the September market will support the Pakenham Springs Primary Schools fund raiser for their community garden project.
