News>Nominate now for Australia Day awards
| Media release: 27 August 2009 | | Everyone knows someone in their town who drives change or tirelessly contributes their time to worthwhile projects.
Show them their efforts are appreciated by nominating them for a Cardinia Shire Australia Day Award so their contribution can be acknowledged.
Winners will be announced at the Australia Day celebrations on 26 January.
This year, nominations are being sought in five categories: - Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Event of the Year and the Community Service Award to honour someone who does not live in Cardinia Shire but has made significant contribution to the Cardinia Shire community.
Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Cr Bill Pearson encourages residents to lodge nominations for awards.
“We are very fortunate to have so many people working to make Cardinia Shire a better place,” Cr Pearson said.
“This is our chance to pay tribute to some of our very best citizens and events and I hope the community will get behind the Australia Day awards and acknowledge and honour the contributions of the people who deserve a pat on the back.”
The 2009 Citizen of the Year was John Glazzard of Tynong. Awards were also presented to Elma Drayton of Bunyip (Senior Citizen of the Year), Eugene Mackinnon of MaryKnoll (Young Citizen of the Year), Vince Bucello of Cranbourne (Community Service Award) and National Youth Week (Community Event of the Year).
