News>Health and Wellbeing plan available for community comment
| Media release: 18 August 2009 | | Cardinia Shire Council has developed a draft Municipal Public Health and Wellbeing Plan (MPHWP) following extensive community input and is now seeking feedback.
The MPHWP is a legislative requirement for all municipal councils across Victoria.
Cardinia Shire Council received over 800 responses to a survey to identify health and wellbeing issues in the Shire, to be addressed in the draft plan. Responses included comments from 40 local organisations.
Council’s Health Promotion Coordinator Georgia Davies-Jackson commented that this was a “fantastic response”.
“Council is very grateful to the individuals and organisations who took the time to respond to the survey. All responses were very useful.” she said.
The survey identified the community’s main priorities as access to health services, bushfire safety and issues relating to local roads.
Other issues relating to health and wellbeing that ranked highly included parks and reserves, being active, local employment, provision and access to health and community information and recycling and waste management.
Some areas highlighted by the community are already being actioned through other strategies.
“The plan emphasises wellness and promoting healthy life styles but is not designed to address medical, clinical or hospital services, which are outside Council’s area of responsibility.
“Council also recognises there are issues which it cannot action.
However, the plan does provide an opportunity for Council to play an advocacy role on important issues which it believes influence health and wellbeing throughout the Shire.
“Responses to the draft MPHWP will help Council determine appropriate actions to address the identified issues over a four year period,” added Ms Davies-Jackson.
The draft MPHWP is on display from Monday 24 August and comments can be provided until 21 September 2009.
The plan can be downloaded from the health and wellbeing section of this website.
Hard copies are also available for viewing in a number of community venues such as Libraries, Neighbourhood Centres, Maternal and Child Health Centres and Kindergartens.
