News>Council approves development plan for retail centre
| Media release: 17 August 2009 | | Plans for an $80 million boost to the local economy have gained momentum with Cardinia Shire Council approving a development plan for a major retail centre in Pakenham.
Councillors at their meeting on 17 August signed off on the development plan which will now lead to consideration of a planning permit as the final stage in a detailed pre-approval process for the retail centre.
Mayor Cr Bill Pearson said there was already plenty of interest in the community about the proposal.
Cr Pearson said the proposal was expected to create to 700 new jobs and 1,108 car parking spaces - including underground car parking – in the heart of Pakenham, along with a host of expanded shopping opportunities.
A new Woolworths supermarket, a Big W department store and specialty shops are proposed to be developed on a 2.9 hectare parcel of land bounded by John Street, Henry Street, Cook Drive and Treloar Lane.
Council resolved in June to sell the land to Fabcot Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Woolworths, to further consolidate Pakenham as a major retail centre.
The development plan outlines concepts for the design and construction of the proposed retail centre, as well as proposing how to address traffic management and drainage issues.
Cr Pearson said Council was confident the plans submitted for the development would deliver a high quality outcome.
He said Council would ensure temporary car parking arrangements were in place to compensate for the closure of the Treloar Lane car park during the construction process.
“Our aim is to ensure this proposal complements the town’s retail heart and enhances the existing central business district,” Cr Pearson said.
“Council is working with our business community to make Pakenham an even better place to shop, work and enjoy, and this is a very significant investment in the town’s future.”
