News>New car park opens in Pakenham
| Media release: 17 August 2009 | | A new temporary public car park will open for shoppers and traders on Monday 24 August as preparations gather momentum for a major new retail development in Pakenham.
Mayor Cr Bill Pearson said Council had leased land in Cook Drive and Henry Street with the finishing touches being applied this week at the site which will provide up to 150 car parking spaces a short walk from the central business district.
The car park is part of Council’s preparations to ensure inconvenience to shoppers and traders is minimised during construction of the proposed $80 million retail development on a 2.9 hectare site bounded by John Street, Henry Street, Cook Drive and Treloar Lane.
Council recently signed off on the development plan which will now lead to consideration of a planning permit as the final stage in a detailed pre-approval process for the retail centre.
Cr Pearson said Council was keen to ensure the process was as smooth as possible and appreciated the public’s patience at this time.
“This development proposal includes provision for the creation of 1,108 public car parking spaces, including underground car parking, in the heart of Pakenham,” he said.
“This, and other initiatives currently in the planning stages, will go a long way to providing a clear long-term solution to the issue of car parking in Pakenham.
“With a project of this scale, there is bound to be some disruption to people’s normal routine but Council is working to ensure the inconvenience will be minimised. Alternative car parking will be provided for shoppers and traders, as well as site workers during construction.”
Signs pointing to the temporary car park will be installed this week with Council also placing advertisements in local newspapers. Public toilet facilities will also be erected at the car park.
A new Woolworths supermarket, a Big W department store and specialty shops are proposed as part of the retail development. Council resolved in June to sell the land to Fabcot Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of Woolworths, to further consolidate Pakenham as a major retail centre.
Council is also building a new library and public hall at the PB Ronald Reserve in a $7.1 million project in partnership with the Federal Government.
