| Media release: 14 August 2009 | | Cardinia Shire Council will spend $1 million on upgrades in Emerald Lake Park in the coming year.
Council was successful in receiving a $500,000 grant from the Federal Government through the Better Regions Funding program.
Council has matched the grant with an additional $500,000 and will carry out a broad range of improvements which were highlighted as priorities in the Emerald Lake Park Strategic Plan.
Ranges Ward Councillor and Chair of the Emerald Lake Park advisory community Cr Ed Chatwin said the proposed works will improve accessibility, enhance the capacity of the venue to host events.
“The improvements will really expand the range of opportunities for visitors to enjoy in the Park,” Cr Chatwin said.
“The park is very much part of life in Emerald but is also major Victorian tourist destination.
“It is vitally important the infrastructure in the park meets the standards expected by local and international visitors.
“Council and the advisory committee are grateful to the Federal government for their support,” he said.
The improvements include:
• $220,000 to be spent upgrading and refitting the Emerald Lake Park Environment Centre and its surrounds adjacent to the Lake. • $200,000 upgrade of toilets to improve accessibility and amenity. • $80,000 to improve signage, historical information, performance space and promotion of the Park. • $60,000 for the development and implementation of a vegetation management plan. • $30,000 to upgrade the ELP Wading Pool
The balance of $410,000 will be used to improve walking tracks, park furniture and roads in the park.
Cr Chatwin said the priorities for improvements in the park were identified as part of community consultation in developing the ELP Strategic Plan in 2006, and were confirmed through meetings of the Advisory Committee.
