| Media release: 12 August 2009 | | The Cardinia Ranges Farmers Market is seeking support from the local community and encouraging them to visit and become part of the action.
Cardinia Shire Mayor Bill Pearson said a recent meeting of market stallholders facilitated by Council acknowledged the need to grow the Market and make it sustainable into the future.
“Council has worked with a dedicated committee of local farmers and producers to run the market,” Cr Pearson said.
The market commenced operation in 2002 as a business incubator for local farmers and producers wishing to sell their fruit and vegetables and other products to the local community.
The market was awarded a highly commended in the Vogue 2008 Entertainment and Travel - Best Farmers’ Market Award.
“It is now felt that partnering with a community organisation may be the next step to expand and improve its viability,” he said.
Cr Pearson said Council is keen to hear from any community groups who wish to become involved in supporting farmers and producers and in return raising funds for their organisation through possible market gate taking, stallholder fees etc.
At the recent meeting market stallholders put forward some new ideas in light of future changes, including the relocation of the Pakenham Racecourse, where the market is held on the second Saturday of the month.
Council is open to the market changing location and is keen to continue supporting the market though a sustainable community model.
“We are looking for a group who are keen to support farmers and producers in selling fresh, quality produce locally and who are also keen to raise awareness about Cardinia Shire area as a producer of quality produce,” he said.
Council will accept expressions of interest from community groups until 4pm on 28 August 2009.
