Survey shows satisfaction and improvement set to continue  Printer Friendly

Media release: 12 August 2009

A new community survey shows Cardinia Shire residents believe Council’s performance has improved in almost every aspect of its operations over the past year.

The survey of 350 people, conducted by the Department of Planning and Community Development, showed 76 per cent of respondents believed Council’s performance was good, adequate or excellent.

Mayor Cr Bill Pearson said Council was already taking action to address areas where it was felt that more could be done.

Conducted in February, the survey is standard across all 79 municipalities and consists of a series of questions asked of 350 people in each municipality.

Cr Pearson said the results of the survey suggested most residents were happy with Council, particularly in the areas of health and human services, waste management, recreation facilities, advocacy, appearance of public areas and customer contact.

“Residents also said they had seen a major improvement in Council’s waste management services which is very pleasing,” Cr Pearson said.

“Waste management is an area where there has been a big focus on improving our service to the community with the introduction of twice-yearly hard rubbish and green waste collections and other initiatives.

"To see our community satisfaction rating rise by 10 per cent in this important area shows residents believe we are on the right track.”

Cr Pearson said 28 per cent of the survey respondents believed Council’s overall performance had improved in the past 12 months with a further 54 per cent rating the performance as the same as last year. A total of 10 per cent believed Council’s overall performance had deteriorated.

“Council is already working to improve in areas where residents felt our performance could be better,” Cr Pearson said.

“Traffic management and parking was raised as an issue – this Council is committed to increasing car parking in busy shopping areas, particularly in Pakenham where the proposed Woolworths development is expected to include a total of 1,150 car parking spaces.”

Cr Pearson said Council would continue to monitor public opinion to ensure its services were meeting community needs.
