Mayor and Councillors

Councillors are the local government representatives, elected by you, to serve as the decision-making body for Cardinia Shire local government area. The municipality is divided into three wards: Ranges Ward, Port Ward and Central Ward.

Elections were held on Saturday 22 October 2016 to elect nine councillors for a four-year term. These profiles and contact details will be updated as soon as possible.

Seeking community feedback: review of Mayor and Councillor allowances

We are reviewing Councillor and Mayoral allowances and we are seeking the community's feedback.

The range of allowances payable is set by the Victorian Government; we are only able to amend allowances in the future if the Minister for Local Government conducts a review of the categories of Councils and amends these or otherwise increases the amounts payable.

At its meeting on 14 November 2016, Council considered the amount of allowances payable. It is proposed that he maximum amount be retained; $74,655 per annum for the Mayoral allowance and $24,127 per annum for the Councillor allowance. An amount equivalent to the superannuation guarantee (currently 9.5%) is payable in addition to these amounts.

Any decisions Council takes in regard to setting allowance amounts will be fixed for the term of this Council through to 2020.

Community members are invited to submit their feedback regarding this decision. Submissions must be in writing and be lodged no later than 13 January 2017. If any person wishes to make a verbal presentation in support of their submission they should state so in the submission and they will be heard by the Council at a date and time to be set.

by Friday 13 January, 2017.

All submissions will be considered in accordance with section 223 of the Local Government Act 1989.

Councillor Code of Conduct

The Councillor Code of Conduct (Word, 137KB) identifies general matters that form the basis of understanding between Councillors; provides support and clarification to Councillors in carrying out their roles and responsibilities; acknowledges that the requirements applying to councils in the Local Government Act 1989 are paramount, but that general principles of good governance must also be observed; and defines the rules of conduct that apply to Councillors so that their behaviour and conduct is seen by the community as being of the highest standard.

Council is required to review the code within 12 months of an election. The current Council was elected in October 2012 and the Code of Conduct has been reviewed and updated.
