Kerbside recycling and green waste

Recycling bin

Tips and tricks

  • Empty items but don’t worry too much about rinsing
  • Squash bulky containers down. If it has a lid replace on the container
  • Keep recycling out of plastic bags: if you put your recycling in plastic bags it can end up in landfill because it can’t be sorted and recycled
  • Check for recycling in every room: bathroom, laundry, kitchen, lounge and study.

What to put in your recycling bin:

  • Paper – including books, magazines, envelopes and paper towels
  • Cardboard – including milk and juice cartons, coffee cups, pizza boxes (remove any leftover food)
  • Cans (aluminium and steel) – including aerosols
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • All plastic bottles and containers – including bottle tops, takeaway boxes and yoghurt pots
  • Pots and pans (no glass lids please)
  • Broken hard plastic toys (no batteries)
  • Other hard plastic household items such as CD cases, coathangers, tupperware and plastic cutlery
  • Plastic plant pots
  • Foil and foil trays

When filling up your yellow bin, put all correct items loose into the bins, not in plastic bags. Plastic bags should be reused where possible or find your nearest supermarket recycling point.
