| Environment and heritage Cardinia has a unique natural environment ranging from fern-filled mountain ash gullies in the northern hills, through drier woodlands in the foothills, to the saltmarsh and mangrove fringed Westernport Bay. Much of the area has been cleared for agriculture and for urban development.

However, cultural heritage is more than just old things treasured from the past, it also includes places existing in the present! In other words things do not need to be old to have heritage significance.
