| Access and inclusion policy | | Cardinia Shire Council has a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that all people have the opportunity to participate in the community.
The Disability, Access and Inclusion Policy and Implementation Strategy is a strategy for changing those Council practices which may result in discrimination against people with a disability.
The Disability, Access and Inclusion Policy and Implementation Strategy will assist Council in: Top
| |
 | improving access to its own premises and services | | building a stronger, more vibrant community through the inclusion of people with a disability | | understanding and responding to the legal and social obligations of access | | training staff to welcome and support a range of customers | | ensuring that access is considered from the outset with respect of Council-owned development proposals, thus reducing cost and potential litigation | | enhancing Council’s leadership in the community | | encouraging and promoting private developers to improve access standards. |
|
|
| Access design guidelines | | In May 2007, Council approved Access Design Guidelines which deliver on Council’s commitment to develop a clear policy statement outlining access responsibilities of builders, developers and Council staff involved in the planning, construction and maintenance of premises used by the public, within the municipality.
The Access Design Guidelines help identify the key access issues and elements that should be considered in order to provide the highest level of access possible for all users, including people with disabilities.
The Access Design Guidelines are intended to apply to newly developed Council-owned facilities ‘where practicable’. Where a Council-owned facility is refurbished to a greater degree than 50 per cent of the building, then this standard would also apply as it would then be considered a ‘new’ facility. Top

| Recreation Directory | | Cardinia Shire Council maintains the Cardinia Shire Recreation Directory for people with a disAbility.
Download the directory or pick up a hard copy from your local community centre or Council's offices in Henty Way, Pakenham. Contact Council on 1300 787 624 (or TTY 5945 4333 for people with hearing or speech disabilities).
The directory also includes mainstream recreation for adults within Cardinia Shire and what facilities are available, including access and other relevant details so that people with a disability who live in or are visiting Cardinia Shire, can decide for themselves what is appropriate.
Where possible, a contact and telephone number has been included so that any interested person may make further enquiries.
The directory is expected to become an indispensable tool for people with disabilities, their friends and families, and also for tourists with disabilities to see, at a glance, whether they will be able to access a facility or service without the disappointment of a wasted trip or phone call.
Cardinia Shire Council thanks the Victorian Government Department of Human Services for its generous funding contribution to this project.
